Introduction

BloxNote is built on four asymmetric roles that are dealt out at random, and the entire round is a negotiation between two of them. Kira and the Kira Follower form the killing team and must eliminate the other side, while L and the Investigators share a task meter and a vote. What makes the design interesting is how differently each role experiences the same map: an Investigator sees task markers and safe routes, Kira sees isolation and timing windows, L sees information to distribute, and the Follower sees a partner to protect. This section breaks down each role's abilities, win condition, difficulty and counterplay, because you cannot read the room until you understand what every other player is trying to accomplish in it.

Role Roster

S

Kira — The Hidden Writer

s

The headline killer role, built around patience, map knowledge and a single lethal opportunity.

AbilitiesSteal a target's ID at close range, write their name in the Death Note, pass the notebook to the Follower, and optionally buy Shinigami Eyes to reveal identities at a cost to task progress.
Best ApproachWork the edges of the map and let targets come to you. Forcing a kill in a crowded room exposes the role instantly and usually costs the round.
Biggest WeaknessNo command cards are currently available to Kira, so there is no utility tool to fall back on when the map layout denies a clean opportunity.
Pro TipUse criminal NPCs as meter pressure when a player kill is too risky. Trading a safe NPC write for task progress can create the endgame you actually need.
A

Kira Follower

a

The support half of the killing team, and by many accounts the stronger of the two.

AbilitiesReceives the notebook from Kira, can continue the killing role if Kira is ejected, and provides cover by mirroring Kira's movement around the map.
Best ApproachStay near your partner without trailing them obviously, and act as a second pair of eyes so a kill never happens next to a witness you failed to notice.
Biggest WeaknessCommunity reviewers argue the Follower is overtuned relative to Kira, which draws suspicion toward the role when lobbies learn the pattern.
Pro TipIf Kira is ejected, do not immediately resume killing. Spend one phase establishing an alibi on tasks before you take over the notebook.
S

L — The Detective

s

The information hub of the Investigator team, and Kira's priority target for a reason.

AbilitiesGathers information privately, can deploy camera command cards to watch areas of the map, and steers the group vote by sharing a selective read of what is known.
Best ApproachReveal information in small, testable pieces so the lobby can verify it. Dumping everything at once makes you the target and gives Kira time to construct a counter-story.
Biggest WeaknessYou are the killing team's priority elimination, and your value collapses entirely in lobbies that refuse to communicate.
Pro TipAssume a successor will take over and leave a clear trail of your reads, because the round can continue after you are written into the notebook.
B

Investigator

b

The numeric backbone of the task team, and the role most new players receive first.

AbilitiesCompletes map tasks that raise a shared meter for the whole team, votes in meetings, and can trigger discussions when something suspicious is observed.
Best ApproachWork the meter in visible locations and report concrete observations in meetings instead of accusations, so L has raw material to work with.
Biggest WeaknessYou have no special information, so you are only as useful as your attention. Silent Investigators effectively hand the round to the killing team.
Pro TipTrack who skips votes repeatedly. Consistent skipping is a common Kira pattern because the killing team rarely needs to remove a task player.

Core Mechanics

Each role interacts with the round through a different resource. The Investigator's resource is time, spent on tasks that raise a shared bar; the more tasks the team completes, the closer the task side is to an outright win. L's resource is information, gathered privately and released selectively to steer the vote without exposing how much is known. Kira's resource is opportunity: the killer needs both a stolen ID and a moment out of sight, which is why map awareness matters more for Kira than raw aggression. The Kira Follower's resource is redundancy, since the notebook can be passed and the killing team survives losing one member. L also has a successor mechanism: if L is eliminated or the round runs past its limit, a replacement takes over the detective role, which means the task team is never fully decapitated by a single kill.

Advantages

The strongest advantage of BloxNote's role design is that every role has a clear, legible purpose, so a player who understands the four win conditions can infer intent from behaviour with surprising accuracy. Kira must eventually get close to people, L must eventually speak, and Investigators must eventually stand at task markers, and each of these creates a tell. The asymmetric structure also means the game stays tense for both sides: the killing team is powerful but outnumbered, while the task team is numerous but blind. That balance produces the bluffing moments the genre depends on, and it rewards players who invest in reading others rather than memorising a single overpowered strategy.

Challenges

The main weakness is that the roles are not equally satisfying to play in a random lobby. L depends entirely on the group listening, and in a silent server the detective's information is wasted, which is a common complaint in community discussion. Kira is also punished heavily by the current command card pool: community reviewers point out that Kira has no command cards at all while L has camera access, and they argue this is a major reason the killing side feels weaker than it should. The Kira Follower, by contrast, is frequently described as stronger than Kira itself, which can make the headline role feel like the lesser assignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are BloxNote roles assigned?+
Roles are randomised at the start of each round with no player preference system, and the exact distribution depends on how many players are in the lobby. In a full server the killing team typically consists of Kira plus the Kira Follower, while everyone else is on the Investigator side under L. Because you cannot choose, the practical takeaway is to learn every role rather than optimising for one, since a player who only understands the task side will be lost whenever the game hands them the notebook.
What happens when L is eliminated?+
According to community reporting, L's role is protected by a successor system: if L is eliminated, or the round runs beyond a set limit, another player takes over the detective role rather than the task team losing its information hub permanently. The exact trigger conditions are not documented officially, so treat the details as player-tested rather than confirmed. Strategically, that means killing L is valuable pressure but not an instant win, and the killing team should plan for the successor to continue coordinating.
Which BloxNote role is easiest for beginners?+
The Investigator is the friendliest starting role because its job is unambiguous: find tasks, complete them, stay alive and report what you saw. There is no special ability to misfire and no need to construct a convincing lie, so you can focus on learning the map and reading player behaviour. Kira is the most demanding role for a new player, since it requires patience, map knowledge and confident bluffing all at once, and mistakes there are punished immediately by the whole lobby.

Quick Tips

💡

Learn the win condition before you learn the ability. A role is defined by what it needs to accomplish, not by the button it presses. Kira wins by removing the other side, not by killing a specific number of players, and that distinction changes whether a risky kill is worth taking in a given round. Players who internalise the win condition make far fewer unforced errors than those who simply chase eliminations.

💡

If you are L, speak early but reveal little. Establishing that you exist gives the lobby a focal point for coordination, while withholding the specifics keeps Kira from building a counter-narrative around your information. A single testable claim is worth more than three vague suspicions, and it gives other players something concrete to confirm or challenge in the next phase.

💡

As Kira, treat distance as your only real defence, because the kill window after writing a name is reportedly almost instant. That means the entire skill of the role is creating a moment where nobody can see you and your target is close, not in reacting after the fact. Scout the map early, note which corners break line of sight, and wait for a target to walk into one of them rather than chasing.

💡

As the Kira Follower, your value is cover rather than kills. Mirroring your partner's route gives the killing team two sets of eyes and makes a lone witness less likely, but it also risks making both of you look coordinated if the lobby is observant. Vary your path slightly, arrive from a different direction, and avoid standing beside Kira during meetings so the pairing is not obvious.

💡

As an Investigator, deliberately work tasks in rooms other players pass through. The meter progress is real, and the witnesses are your alibi. A player who has been visibly completing tasks all round is dramatically harder to eject than one who has been drifting around the map, even when the drifter is innocent. Visibility, not silence, is how the task side survives.
